Mama’s Authentic Lasagna

Are you ready to learn how to make the best authentic lasagna of all time? Well, grab your stretchy pants and let’s get cooking!

First, let’s gather our ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 6 oz can tomato paste
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese, grated

Now that we have everything we need, let’s get to work!

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large pot, cook the ground beef and sausage over medium heat until nicely browned. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Step 2: Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir everything together until well combined. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, and beaten egg.

Step 4: Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish. Place 4 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce, breaking them if necessary to fit. Spread a layer of the cheese mixture over the noodles and top with another layer of meat sauce. Repeat this layering process until you have used all of the ingredients, making sure to end with a layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 5: Sprinkle the grated mozzarella cheese over the top of the lasagna. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Step 6: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is nicely browned and bubbly. Let the lasagna sit for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow it to set up.

And there you have it, the best authentic lasagna of all time! Serve it up with a big salad and a nice glass of red wine for the ultimate Italian feast. Buon appetito!
